At the Pinehurst Surgical Facial Plastic Surgery Center, we treat many skin blemishes and skin cancers. We work closely with the dermatologists in the area who frequently refer patients who have a biopsy-proven skin cancer for further treatment. We also work closely with the Mohs surgeons at the Cary Skin Center, Duke and at Chapel Hill to reconstruct facial defects following removal of lskin cancers using the Mohs technique.
In our office, we are able to remove many smaller skin cancers and perform the reconstruction on the same day. A pathologist from the hospital comes to our surgery center during the procedure to evaluate the tissue that has been removed. Once the pathologist obtains negative margins, we can proceed with the reconstruction. Using special plastic surgical techniques, the surgeon is able to camouflage many of the incisions to try to provide the best wound healing and cosmetic result available.
Frequently, people are referred for Mohs surgery which is a special pathologic technique that allows the Mohs surgeon to evaluate 100% of the edges of a removed skin cancer to obtain the highest cure rate possible. Frequently, patients are referred for Mohs surgery who have fairly large lesions, or lesions that are in a very sensitive area such as the eyelids or nose. Once the Mohs surgeon is sure the cancer is removed, they may refer the patient back to our facility to review the reconstruction options. We frequently try to coordinate this with the Mohs surgeon in order that a patient may have their skin cancer removed one day, and have the reconstruction performed the very next day.
